On August 21st, Oregon will witness the Great American Eclipse!
The next total solar eclipse visible in Oregon will be in 75 years. In 1999, I witnessed a total solar eclipse in Iasi, Romania, where I lived and practiced at that time. The whole event lasted for over 2 hours. It was dusk and for about 2-3 minutes it was dark, like at night. This occurred at 2:00 PM. It was an amazing feeling for me and other hundreds of people gathered on the hill for the best view. I felt like I was in union with the cosmos that stretched out before me. We recommend our patients to not look directly at the sun during the eclipse with naked eyes, sunglasses, cameras, binoculars, smoked glass, and most of the welding goggles. To properly and safely enjoy this unique phenomenon, use your special eclipse glasses. A total solar eclipse visible in the United States is rare and precious, like our vision is. Watching a sun eclipse unprotected, could cause severe and permanent ocular burns, with corneal, retinal or macular damage, possible early in life cataracts, and vision loss. Let's enjoy safely together this unique experience for all of us!
